Mark GarveyDate: 1/9/07
Mark Garvey, #335 from Bear, Delaware, was seriously injured March 12, 2006 while racing at the Spring Classic in Lake Whitney, Texas. Mark suffered fractures to both his neck and back, and a spinal cord injury leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. He spent 1 week in the ICU in Fort Worth, TX and then through a very generous donation from a local contractor, Mr. Harry Simione, Mark was flown by special medically equipped jet to Philadelphia, PA and was taken immediately to Jefferson University Hospital. Jefferson is one of the top hospitals in our area for Spinal Cord Injuries. From almost the moment he arrived, he was surrounded with a team of trauma surgeons, neuro surgeons, and specially trained nurses who began evaluating his injuries. The very next day, March 21, Mark underwent surgery to repair the damage to his crushed thoracic vertebrae, and relieve the pressure on his spinal cord. They inserted two 12 inch titanium rods on each side of his spine to stabilize the fracture. Surgery went very well, and within another week Mark was transferred to Magee Rehabilitation Hospital to begin the first of two parts of his rehabilitation.

His first stay at Magee was five weeks. Unfortunately, he had to remain in a brace (a horrible contraption called a clam shell) that went from his chin to his hips, keeping his head, neck, and spine all immobile for 8-10 weeks after his surgery. The only time he could have it off is if he was lying in bed, and then he still had to have a collar on his neck. I am sure Mark will tell you this one of he worst parts. During the first five weeks at Magee, he spent several hours a day doing physical therapy, occupational therapy, and learning about his injury. Because of the brace, he was limited to how much he could actually do, so he came home for 5 weeks, to allow him time to heal. It was good for him to be home, and of course, one of the first places he went, even with the brace and equipment, was to our home track Blue Diamond. He got a video camera, and started taping his friends riding.

Finally, the doctor cleared him from the brace!! Mark went back to Magee for 5 more weeks. He worked very hard building back up his upper body strength, learning how to balance himself, and move his body without the use of his legs, and to adjust to the world around him. Through out the entire stay, Mark worked extremely hard and exceeded everyones expectations.

Mark was discharged from Magee at the end of June. Just in time to attend a benefit race held for him at Broome-Tioga over the July 4th holiday by Abbie Bardo, a close friend of Marks. It was a huge success, and people were extremely generous. Mark was able to purchase a 4-wheeler with some of the money raised and is now riding it. He is currently doing outpatient physical therapy several days a week, and catching up with school. Although his paralysis has not changed, Mark is determined to continue doing everything he did before. One of his goals is to purchase a new bike, and adapt it for him, so that he can be riding again soon. This is an amazing kid, who has more heart and determination than most adults I know.

Darius GloverDate: 1/9/07
Hi, my name is Darius Glover, I'm 15 years old. On July 1st 2006 I was racing at Field of Dreams Motocross Park in Boswell , Pennsylvania when I suffered a fractured hip, a hair line fracture in my neck and I broke my back/vertebras and had to get a spinal fusion from T-5 to T-9 and the fusion was T-6 and T-7. I was heading to the lip of a big double when the face of the double was wet and it shot me kind of side ways and I positioned the bike straight but it happened so fast I could' T get the front end of the bike up and my frame hit the top of the landing and the suspension unloaded and shot me and the bike back up in the air. unfortunately I hit the ground first and as soon as I hit the ground I got knocked out for about 2 minutes. In the process of being knocked out my bike came down behind me and landed on my back. I was flew out to a local Johnstown P.A shock trauma hospital, I was there for 18 days. On July 18th I was then transported to Kennedy Krieger rehab institute. I was in the rehab institute from July 18th to September the 30th. I am now home and slowly getting return to my lower body and as soon as I get walking again I will be back at the track racing with all my friends. I just want to thank the Mid-Atlantic Fallen riders Foundation for helping me and my family really get threw this.

My name is Brian Luckeroth. I was hurt at my friends house while practicing on memorial day of 2006. The bike nose dived in the air and the front wheel clipped the backside of the landing causing the bike to land on top of me. I was air lifted to shock trauma in Baltimore and was told that I broke 3 vertebrae's and fractured to others. I have damage to the spinal cord and was also told that I would never walk again. I am now in therapy and hoping for the best. I would like to tell everybody thank you for there prayers and to continue with them. I would also like to thank Mid-Atlantic Fallen Riders Foundation for helping out and also everybody else that has helped, THANKS

Well I am doing good, Insurance was only gonna cover 24 visits for therapy but the therapist said that I was making progress so they extended it for 5 more months I think. The doctor said I have gained sensation one level lower then my injury. I'm Still faithful to regain everything and walk again. Other then that I've Been working on building my upper body and have been doing very well.

Kyle FitzwaterDate: 1/9/07
My name is Kyle Fitzwater and I have been racing motocross since I was 7 years old. In the spring of this season, 2005, I crushed 2 vertebras while riding at a local area qualifier. I was tied for 3rd place and at the white flag lap my bike hit a tire filled with dirt and covered with grass at the top corner of a jump and it kicked the back end up. The bike flipped and landed on my back and crushed 2 vertebrae. I was air lifted to UVA Hospital from a local hospital where I went under 7 hours of surgery. I couldnt move my legs at all initially however after lots of prayers and my Mom exercising my legs I slowly started getting feeling and movement in my left leg. After 2 weeks of therapy there I started getting movement in my right leg and today I am walking and back on my bike. I want to thank the Mid-Atlantic Fallen Riders Foundation for helping me and my family.

Nick FarleyDate: 1/9/07
Hi, my name is Nick Farley. Back in May of the 2005 season I was racing motocross in Virginia. I made a mistake on the approach to a HUGE Step up and crashed. The next thing I remember I was in Shock Trauma in Richmond getting prepped for surgery. I broke both femurs, both hips, my left shoulder and bruised my lungs. After staying there for about a week I was moved to a Rehabilitation center in Chapel Hill, NC. I had to stay in the rehabilitation center for over a month. I spent the entire summer and most of the fall in a wheelchair. Im facing a hip replacement in the future, and though I love racing, Im pretty sure that I m done. I wanted to take the time to thank the Mid-Atlantic Fallen Riders Foundation that was formed to help riders that have been seriously injured racing. Everything they have done to help me and my family is appreciated.
